It’s A Start

Today is the 31st of July 2017.
More than half a year has gone and what have you achieved in this seven months?
Did you stick to the resolution that you made for yourself?
I don’t really remember mine or I can’t even be sure if I had one but I think I said I wanted to be better. To be a better person in general perhaps, a better daughter, a better friend, a better employee, just to be better.

Well I’d like to think that I am finally making a greater effort to be a better person.
For a start, I am finally paying attention to my health and what I am eating. (Of course the secret to this is that I gained almost 3 kilograms which is totally unacceptable.)
I guess the reason for my weight gain is that I binge eat on my road to recovery from a bad break up.
I remember myself binge eating a lot of years back after a break up and I gained weight to the point where a mamak guy told me that I’m getting fatter haha. That is so embarrassing.
Eating makes me happy, it still does but I would like to do it more consciously.

So my brother asked me what have I been eating in Melbourne. :(

So now I am just trying to shed some fats by doing it the right way.
I went to gym and did exercise at home 5 days in a week which is shocking because I’ve never really been this dedicated.
I have since stopped eating butter and I won’t eat butter until I lost my weight. In fact even after I lost my weight I still wouldn’t eat butter like how I used to with exception at fine dining restaurants cause their bread and butter are always super nice haha.
I’ve also cut down sugar which is the number one source for weight gain. I didn’t realise how sugar is in everything until I became more concious by checking on the nutrition information on food packagings. Just because you don’t eat ice-cream or cakes doesn’t mean you’re not having sugar intake.
SUGAR IS EVERYWHERE! Wanted to put tomato relish on my toast but I realise the existence of sugar in it so I ended up slathering mustard instead which have zero sugar by the way.

I’ve cut down my rice intake as well and it has been four days since I last had rice. SHOCKING seeing that I am such a rice freak. Instead of eating rice for dinner I eat my roast vegetables with fish or chicken with quinoa wraps.
I’ve cut down red meat tremendously, only twice last week and this is a news because if you know me I am a fucking carnivore. I eat like a man, I need my meat and rice.
Now I’m just like, roast vegetables without oil and sauce wtf.
For breakfast I just have bircher, chia or rice flakes with soy milk. Me, soy milk. Me and soy milk.
It’s a joke, I never drink soy milk in Australia.
Even when I get a free cup of chai I was asking questions like are there sugar and milk in it.
I can have soy milk with anything but not coffee. I need my coffee with full cream milk and my way of cutting it is instead of drinking a 7oz coffee at work, I now drink piccolo instead.
It is not entirely for health and weight issues, I also want to be more ethical towards animals.
I know I cant be vegetarian but I just want to say no to red meat as much as I can.
The image of these animals screaming while being slaughter kinda makes me go…….. I don’t know how to put it in words.
I know I will never give it up entirely but I still want to make an effort to cut it out as much as I can.

I’ve been buying free range eggs for a long time now and although the price is almost double from caged eggs I still tell myself to make peace with the price. It’s a pity to have a life being caged, no where to roam and then ended up in someone’s dinner plate.
I talked to my mom a couple of days ago and said that we need to start eating free range chicken and she said one free range chicken is equivalent to two chickens she bought from market.
So I said it’s okay, we cant bring the money along to our grave anyway and she said, ‘yeah but you never ever pay for the chickens.’ HAHAHA, yeap sorry mom. I’ll still convince her none the less.

There are people who decided to be a vegetarian or vegan and if you are one of them, good on you.
Sometimes being a vegan seems like a hipster thing to do but being vegan doesn’t equals to not eating meat and eggs, or not drinking milk. The commitment is more to that.
It means no honey and mayonnaise. It means no leather goods and if you want to be a vegan please give up your channel bag or prada shoes. It means no fur and no down jacket that contains real feather. It really means so much more.

I’m not a person who can do something so great that I can change the world but I want to do my small part as one of the residence of this earth to make this place less shitty that’s all.
If I can make a change in my eating habits and diet for animals, all the more I should do better in trying to make a change for human beings.

All my life I’ve been the kind of consumer who buy cheap things, buy loads of them even if they’re of the shittiest quality. I went to Bangkok with an empty luggage bag, filled it all up with new buys and home it went with me.
All the clothes that I have is weighing me down (and probably 25% of them I have yet to touch). Like it is giving me mental frustration because it is so cluttered.
So now I made a promise to myself to declutter my wardrobe and in the future shop from ethical and sustainable clothing brands, to go for slow fashion instead of fast fashion. Buy quality instead of quantity.

Don’t spiral into that consumerism hole whereby you feel like you need to buy the newest collection from places like Topshop and Zara every other week, wore it once and never be seen by the daylight again.
I’ve seen people like such because they cant be seen wearing the same clothing because really, you gotta be trendy to be cool.
If you’d like to check on how ethical a certain brand is, you can download this app called ‘Good on you’ and they will have ratings with descriptions on how the company is doing for you.
As far as I’m concern, Adidas seems like a more ethical brand than Nike.
Although brands like H&M or Zara are fast fashion but in my opinion as long as you take care of your clothing and willing to let go of being on trend, it doesn’t really matter if you shop from these places with the condition that they are being ethical to their factory workers.
Sustainability is not only buying from ethical brands, it is also about not having your clothing end up in landfills. It is going to end up being the same if you buy from ethical brands but only wear it twice. In a way you can still very well purchase that dress from Zara as long as your dress has a long life span. H&M has got a ‘concious’ collection so despite not being 100% ethical or sustainable, brands like such are also trying. Zara also discloses details of factories and do not use child labour so it really is a good start.

I don’t have the habit of taking good care of my belongings but from now on I will take good care of my clothings so that they can last longer. I think buying from ethical and sustainable brands help cause they aren’t cheap in the first place and because they’re not as affordable I have to look after them otherwise I’ll be broke as shit.

You know what else is good by shopping ethically?
You actually save so much more from not buying fur or leather goods.
Because you want to be ethical and live a sustainable life you will be able to give up the thought of owning branded leather goods and by that you get to put your money into better use.
I only have two leather goods in my life right now, one Louis Vuitton bag which is a hand me down from my mom (actually I snatched it from her HAHA) and my Chloe wallet which I bought last year.
I’ve always wanted a Prada wallet because I reckon a good leather wallet can last me a long long time (but I’m not willing to pay the price and I lost interest in the design so I opt for Chloe instead). Now that I’ve changed my mindset towards leather all the more I will use it for an extended time.
I’m not sure if I want to have more leather goods because most of the leather goods created made our world a much more harmful place to live in as much as it is a by product from meat industry.

Modern leather tanneries and the leather they make are frighteningly toxic. So toxic, that there are more tanneries than any other business on the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Superfund list, the list that identifies the priority environmental cleanups in the U.S. So toxic, that 95% of U.S. tanneries have moved their operations overseas to avoid environmental oversight penalties. So toxic, that many old tannery sites can’t be used for agriculture or built on or even sold.” Rowan Gabrielle, from “Leather for life” White Paper.

Unless it is stated that said leather goods uses vegetable tanning or is made from recycled leather, I might very well give it all up all together (and not like I can afford anyway).
We really should start checking the sources of our food and clothings, which we often spend the most of our money on. Vote with our money, we shall.

We can never do a 100% but we can each do 10% and with today’s earth population, imagine what 10% from each and everyone of us can do to make a change.
As the year and technology moves forward, our humanity, our conciousness as a human being and our earth are moving backwards. It’s a shame, really.

Tasmania/ June 2017

Tasmania has been nothing but amazing (except being ridiculously cold, gloomy, and rather quiet). I’ve been wanting to go to Tasmania for the longest time for their southern light but unfortunately no southern light was there for me. The KP number was at it’s lowest and everyday Tassie was just a big gloomy ball.

I was in Hobart for two nights with my mom and other relatives when they came to visit. Due to time constraint I didn’t get to explore Launceston, the upper part of Tasmania. Don’t we always have to leave some small regrets behind so that we have something to look forward to in the future.

Tried using ND filter for the first time to create those soft dreamy waves with a longer exposure but I reckon I needed a higher stop filter. Pretty happy how it turned out though.

Another try.

Joined a tour and have a guide took us to Mount Wellington and boy was it freezing cold. Everyone stayed indoor looking at the scenery through a glass but I didn’t want to let the cold stop me from taking photographs of this breathtaking view. After about ten minutes I felt a sharp pain on my ears because the wind was just too strong and the cold was unbearable.

Hobart under my feet.

The guide also took us to Tahune Airwalk which is pretty similar to Otway Fly Tree Top Walk in Victoria. If you like easy hiking, you’ll probably like Tahune as the hike was really easy with interesting views along the way. Spotted tons of different types of mushrooms.

My relatives split up with us so it was just me and my mom walking and hiking together which gave us a really good time to bond in the nature. It just felt so nice to have my mom there exploring with me and talking about everything.

Hobart city, can’t do without a street photo.

Back in Victoria, at Ballarat wildlife park. Llamas in their formation haha.

My mom’s expression trying to tell you that she can’t deal with animals being so near to her.

This was actually so funny because after a short while my mom screamed and said there was poop on the kangaroo’s claw and she freaked out hahaha. There are poops all over the place so there should be lots of poops on these kangaroos’ claws haha.

The usual spot for tourist, Saint Kilda. Breathtaking sunset, as always.

She’s just getting cuter as she age, she said she wants to take fancy ‘artistic’ picture and I kinda interpreted it as silhouette lol.

One and only penguin we spotted at St. Kilda.

Tasmania didn’t quite turn out to be how I expected because it was way too gloomy and there was no southern light that I was expecting. The silly me also made a mistake by not checking MONA’s opening hours hence on the day when I wanted to visit MONA it was actually close. :(
I might actually go for a day trip just for MONA before I fly home end of next month, that’s how bad I want to pay MONA a visit.

I also managed to take some photos with my newly bought Nikon F3 (not so new anymore) and I shall upload it soon when my time ain’t so pack.
Till then.

Leftovers from February

Hello, I am finally all settled down in my second home after like about ten days and a series of vomiting and purging.
Yeap, second day back and I had some food poisoning issues going on but I had good friends who came and cooked me porridge. :)

3 weeks of holiday made me came to a conclusion that I will head home during mid year come rain or shine.
This short holiday back home helped ease my heart and at the same time opened my eyes yet again.
When you’ve been away for too long or too caught up with whatever that holds your heart you’ll tend to miss out on a lot.

Although my mom didn’t exactly put it in words I know that she is very supportive of my decision so for now I just have to do what I am supposed to do which is to work hard for the next few months, then pack up and leave.

It was nice to have my mom send me to airport (that’s a first) due to some unforeseen circumstances but at the same time I felt really heavy hearted to come back to Melbourne alone.
Why does it never ever gets easier?

I know the remaining months won’t be easy but I just feel glad for everything. I wouldn’t trade what I have now for what I had in the past.
Interesting life experiences make good stories in the future.

Here’s some pictures I took during my holiday with film, except the first two.\Went for high school Chinese New Year gathering but before that I went back to my high school and had a stroll despite the heavy rain.
I miss those carefree days when my only worry was what to eat for lunch.
Should I go for nasi lemak or french fries and how about that fried chicken? Haha.

Love my ‘finger’ cheong sam which I bought last year but didn’t get to alter it on time.

Buddies I went to school with.

More than a month back I gave my mom a call and requested her to look around the house for our old film camera but she was too lazy so I ended up searching for it in my entire room. And there I have it, my mom’s old Kodak VR35.
I think she likes the idea of me shooting film too, she seems a little excited like she asked if I know how to load the film haha.
Below few pictures were taken with Kodak VR35 and Agfa Vista 200 but I didn’t quite like the way it turned out. I’m not too sure if it’s the camera or the film.
The outcome weren’t very sharp and the colours turned out a little dull, or maybe the days when I took pictures were not sunny enough.
I’ll try the camera again with at least iso400 next round. Or maybe flash, maybe I’ll try flash with this camera.

Light leaks.

I loaded the film, took a few pictures of my mom and suddenly realised the film counter might not be accurate. The paranoid me was unsure if I loaded the film correctly so with no choice I opened up the back of my camera (yeap now it’s mine) to make sure and as expected I destroyed the first few pictures I took of my mom. Hence all these light leak pictures. :(

Bentong.

The day when I prayed for a lot of things.

Someplace beautiful.

Below pictures were taken from my Fujifilm Mini Tiara and Agfa Vista 400 which highlighted a lot of blue tone.

Here comes the bride! (vvens.com)

These two cuties!

Why do I look so out of place?

This picture is super cute! Jia Jia blocked her face with the rose hahaha!

Bangkok Chinatown, 02 17′.

Mom why your eyes no open?

Look at the exaggerated blue tone.

Grand palace which we ended up not going in because the tickets sold were quite expensive and queue was extremely long.

I really need to focus my mind when taking pictures with film, at times I still snap it like it’s a digital camera. Need to train my patience.

And this was taken with Kodak at Melbourne rooftop bar. For some reason it took me so many weeks to finish up that 27 exposures.

I developed my agfa 400 in KL that costs less than 50% of what I paid in Melbourne but it took them more than a week to get it done while my agfa 200 only takes a few hours for Digi Direct to send those files into my email. Talk about efficiency.

Ok my efficiency is shit too cause it took me so long to update my blog but since I somehow made the old laptop at home work now I will be more efficient!
(I have troubles deciding which photo to upload on instagram and which to post it here.)

Stay Broke Shoot Film

One sleep away from reaching home! I’m boarding real soon and hopefully I can get some good sleep in the plane later.
No screaming kids and tons of empty seats please!

I may have just overpacked a little and if my mom sees my luggage bag she’ll ask me if I’m having a fashion show HAHA!
Or if I am opening up a camera shop because….

My growing camera collection.

I recently took an interest in film photography and I must say shooting with film does make one go broke.
I’ve just been purchasing cameras after cameras I think I have about like ten now. (Oops.)
Shooting with film is a lot of fun (and money) and there are a lot of pros from it.

First and foremost, shooting with film definitely instill more patience in me because each frame counts. Unlike digital camera, I can continuosly click on the shutter button and look for a picture that looks right. But with film you sort of only have one chance to make it right and there’s no way to check on the photo you just took with a screen. Of course you can take multiple shots of the same subject with the same composition and settings but really who’s gonna do that with film.

In our fast pace digital world, shooting with film does make me go slower and see things in a different manner.
It trains me in doing all that photography calculation in my head instead of depending on a screen that tells me all the information I need to know. In the long run or even now, it somehow makes taking pictures with my digital Fujifilm easier or least my knowledge is slightly more indepth now.

Not to mention the outcome of a film photograph always look better than a photography taken with a digital camera with a ‘film filter’ edit. Also the digital files could crash but with film if you store it properly it can last a lifetime.
People just tend to appreciate films more compared to the digital stuff.

As for the cons from shooting film, it is really just the money that is involved because it can really burn a hole in my pocket especially when I am obssesed haha.

First you need to buy the film and when you are done shooting the whole roll you need to bring your roll to develop and you can decide if you want it to be scan and print or just scan or perhaps just printing is sufficient.

Of course I can always aim for cheap films which can go as low as $3 per roll and then find a cheap place to process my film but quality may or may not differ.

More over I am the easily obsessed type so I am obsessed with trying different films and buying cameras.

Oh god what have I gotten myself into?

So by far I’ve shoot 3 different rolls of film with 3 different cameras and here are the results.

First roll was shoot using Ilford’s disposable camera, XP2.

My first shot that started it all.

I took two pictures of this girl because I wasn’t sure if I took the first one. The shutter button was shallow and I just couldn’t be sure especially when there ain’t any screen to shoe me whatsoever.

With film, the first step is of course getting a film camera which can go from dirt cheap to ‘branded bag’ sort of expensive. You could probably buy a point and shoot for $10 from an Opshop or market or even Ebay.
Then comes the film which costs about $3 or $4 for a cheap film or could go as high as $25 or probably more. (In aud, not ringgit.)

When you’re done shooting you gotta get your film processed so you can either choose just developing the film or develop and scan or develop and print or all of the three.
It all depends on what you need for yourself, like perhapss you can scan and print it yourself but of course scanning it with a good proper scanner bya professional will have a different outcome.

The second roll was shoot using my Contaflex 2 with Fomapan 400.
I bought my Zeiss Ikon Contaflex for $80 with a case included and it is quite a good price because the camera is in really good condition. It is a 50 years old camera or older than that and it doesn’t require and battery to operate it.
As for the film it turned out rather grainy, not sure if I really like it. I look it up online and it seemed like this particular film don’t do too well with scanning.

I also learned how to develop my own black and white film so this roll of Fomapan 400 was self developed.

For some weird reason my first two rolls was in black and white
and I am more of a colour person so I still can’t be very sure of what to feel about film but once I got my first colour film back today, I was stoked. I actually jumped in joy haha.
I developed this roll at Digi Direct, they were extremely quick! They got my job done the next day and besides, they will give a free roll of film everytime you develop a roll there.
They’re also not as expensive as Michael’s.

Third roll was shot with Leica Z2X and HillVale Sunny 16 film.
I really really love it. Inititally I wanted to sell of my Leica cause I got myself a ‘better’ point and shoot but now that the pictures are back and I really love how the pictures turned out, I will keep it.
Also this is probably the only Leica I can afford haha.

I love how shooting film gives me a feeling of opening up the present, that little surprise feeling. The build up anticipation and that sort of joy.

Okay I gotta turn off my phone I don’t even have time to align this post and cross check my spelling + grammar. Doubt anyone is gonna read this.

Safe flight to myself! See you soon ‘HOME’.

Wrong Way; Go Back

Ilford XP2 disposable, ISO400.

Remember when I said I was stuck at a crossroad not moving forward?
As I sit here in my room typing this I can clearly tell you that this is not how I want to continue living my life anymore.
Yes no doubt I love what I am doing and I still love this city as much as I first fell for it but day in day out I feel like there are only so much I can deal with.

I WANT TO GO HOME.

Going home for good is the decision I’ve made for myself.
I didn’t realise how sad this decision can be until now, until my tears started flowing. Such bittersweet.
Sometimes I wonder, there are always choices for us humans to make but there are also times when no matter which choices you end up choosing, it’ll break your heart still in the end.
This is what I am feeling right now.

Yes I want to go home but going home breaks my heart too.
Has all these been nothing but just a dream? Is it time now to wake up from this dream I called mine?
I am trying to work around my new plan and hopefully by mid year I will be home for good.

Today has been an exceptionally gloomy day as something awful just happened in Melbourne city, nearby where I work. Long story short, a crazy guy ran over a lot of people with his car in the city and for now, 5 is pronounced dead including a young child. This is so so awful, I cant imagine what their family members are feeling right now.

This happened 5 to 10 minutes after my lunch break and if I were to make a different decision today by having my break 10 minutes later I would have witness it all.
I loitered around Bourke Street mall and that was what I planned to do so no matter what time I have my break, I will be on the street. Such simple decision could change a person’s life. I could witness the incident or I could be the injured one or even worse I could be the dead one.
Those who lost their lives, maybe if they make a different decision on where to grab their lunch they might have escape it.

This is the time when I realise that I really wish to be around my family or at least my mom. If I were to be that unlucky and got killed in the incident, who’s gonna find out? Honestly I feel so lonely here that if I were to have any accident at home and die, no one will find out till I rot and smell. I don’t wanna die in another country with no people who matters enough around me.

We humans often think that we’re invisible and whatever that is reported on the news wont happen on us. I am not being pessimistic but I had a taste of life since young and I know no one will be excepted.
Fact is our parents or siblings will die whether you like it or not and the idea of them passing when they’re 80 years old or when they’re old is just plain naive.
Who promised you that parents will only die when they’re old?
Who said that siblings wont die when they’re only in their 20s? Who said that our friends are immune to accident and sickness that they will have fun and laugh with us till we grow old?
Who said that we ourselves will have the chance to continue growing, get married, have kids, have grandkids and then only die?
No one ever said that.

I’ve seen people die and I am not even talking about the passing of old grandparents when I am in preschool sort of experience. I am talking about the closest person I could ever have and I was 12.
How can I not go home and spend as much time as I possibly can with my mom now that she is all I am left with?
Best city to live in, excellent delicious coffee, extremely good food and such good currency, none of these can exchange with the time I have left with my mom.
None of these matters enough.

This transition is gonna be hard but I will make it because I will always come back stronger.
Perhaps I should start appreciating my remaining time in Melbourne, just a couple of months left and I will close this chapter moving on to the next.
I am already thinking of refurbishing my room when I get back and get myself a dog! Heh.

I will find a way out of this, definitely will.
A reminder to all of you and I cant say this enough, please appreciate those around you especially your parents.
Our time here is short, way shorter than all of us imagine.

Homecoming

Hello there.
I’ve made a decision to try and start blogging again after my previous post.
I used the word TRY because I really don’t know how long will I stay this time nor do I know how often will I update my blog.

I’m pretty unsure of my future right now so I can’t be sure of how committed or dedicated can I be this time round but I will definitely try.
I am currently at a crossroad not moving forward because I am very unsure of which route to take. I do not want to make the wrong decision cause I hate making them and I will beat myself up for it. I have one too many wrong decisions in life and I just really don’t wish to make another.
I know this is self contradicting when I have a ‘never a failure always a lesson’ etched on my body forever.
Too many a times the only person whom I can’t seem to forgive is myself.

Anyway, doing this is like reuniting with an old friend who knows me inside out, I do find comfort in blogging.
I always do, I’m a person with too many words but there weren’t a stage so I built myself one and ramble as much as I can to invisible audiences. Honestly if I can’t put my feelings and thoughts into words I don’t think I can continue surviving, I’ll burst and dissapear into thin air.

The past 8 years or so I’ve been a very ‘pink blogger’ and I want all things pink but I can’t deal with it anymore HAHA.
I still love the colour pink but as of now I would much rather appreciate it from far than to ‘own’ it.

I’ve been looking high and low for a template that I will be happy with and I am extremely picky when it comes to template to the point where I drive myself crazy.
I have to look at fonts, colours, side bar and the width, header, footer wtf and the list goes on. Then again I am too poor and insignificant to hire myself a designer so here I am just giving myself some non existent annoyance.
I will settle for this new outlook for now until I muster all my energy to look for a better one.

If a couple of years back someone came and tell me that one day I’m gonna opt for a simple and white template for my blog (with hints of green) I would say that he or she is crazy cause that is as impossible as my break up.
(I never really like the color green all my life!)
But break up happened and now a white blog for Peggy Chow happened too HAHAHA.

Actually sometimes I find my break up to be quite funny so I like to joke about it (to myself wtf).
Hope some new posts will be due to happen soon.
